What’s involved?
The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required by law to operate a VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) device on any British-flagged vessel which has been voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand-held equipment using international channels. There will be a practical radio session during the course.
What will I learn?
- How to select channels, routine radio use and the correct language to adopt
- A brief history of radio communications and the law around using VHF radios
- The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) which is an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures
- What Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) numbers are
- Distress calls
