Thames CPD Programme

The Port of London Authority (PLA), Thames Skills Academy (TSA) and Company of Watermen & Lightermen (CWL) have introduced the first Port-wide Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programme for all Masters in command of an Intra-port Commercial Vessel, whether newly qualified or with years of experience.

The prime objective is to improve safety on the Thames. In many other sectors – transport, aviation, construction – CPD is a well-established pathway to incentivise everyone to maintain and refresh their current skills and learn and develop new skills as the industry changes.

The Thames CPD Programme is currently voluntary; from 1st January 2024, it will be regulated through the PLA General Directions.

The Thames CPD Programme consists of Mandatory, Accredited and Skills & Experience training/activities that allow you to accumulate enough points over successive 5-year periods to complete the requirement to remain active on the River.

The TSA is the administrator of the Thames CPD Programme.
