What’s involved?
This one-day course that focuses on the knowledge required for safely securing vessels to a quay, including line-person duties, safe access and communication.
What will I learn?
- Mooring theory: terms of vessel, terms of equipment, forces
- Mooring safety: hazards, use of lines - practical, snapback, common knots, communication
- Rope and wire management: types and properties of lines, regulations on checking lines and equipment
- Hand signals and communications: vessel flags, voice, UHF/VHF hand signals
- Barge manoeuvring: vessel mooring, securing in tides taking into account range/height and flow, rafting up
- Tides and charts: overview of charts, overview of tides, short exercise on tidal heights
- Safe access: dangers, requirements and checks, gangways, ladders, direct access
- Regulation: maritime and landside regulation, PUWER, ACoP, COSWP, working at height etc.
- Responsibilities: berth owner, employer, vessel master, worker
