The TSA team were proud to join the Bridge Watch volunteers, TfL London River Services and the RNLI at Tower Millennium Pier on #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, Wednesday 10 September 2025, who were patrolling the Central London Bridges from 5am to 5pm.
Suicide is the leading cause of death on the tidal Thames. The Bridge Watch programme provides a physical presence of teams of volunteers who patrol the areas on and around the bridges of London. The volunteers come from all walks of life and have a brief to identify and support those who are at risk of self-harm and suicide by listening, understanding, talking, and working with a team to provide the necessary support to help them.
The Thames Skills Academy, which leads on raising water safety standards and skills on the Thames, supports Bridge Watch through providing suicide intervention training for all the Bridge Watch volunteers. The 3-hour face-to-face interactive training is vitally important to give the skills and confidence to initiate and manage a conversation with someone who appears to be feeling suicidal and to connect them securely with further support. The training is delivered in Central London and is available to everyone in London so they have the opportunity to prepare for the moment when they might need to support someone in distress.
