The Thames Skills Academy was delighted to take part in the PLA’s reception in the House of Commons on Monday, 2nd September 2024 for members of parliament and partner organisations, advocating for a thriving and sustainable tidal Thames.
Hosted by Jim Dickson MP (Dartford) and with a keynote address from Mike Kane MP, Minister for aviation, Maritime and Security, attendees discussed the vital importance of the Tidal Thames for the UK’s economy and its essential role in supporting UK growth and our communities.
Members of the TSA team shared firsthand accounts of their experience and how we showcase the diverse and rewarding jobs the Thames offers to schools, youth clubs and the National Jobs and Careers Service. Apprentices from Cory and Woods Silverfleet talked about the skills they are developing through the Boatmaster and Marine Engineering apprenticeships, as they build their careers on the Thames.
The new riparian MPs were also interested to find out about two bespoke training courses in water safety. Princess Royal Award-winning Riverside Personal Safety training for everyone working on or near the Thames, which is becoming the new norm for all developments on the Thames. Suicide Intervention training to equip everyone who lives or works on the Thames with the skills and confidence to be able to help someone in distress. Parliament has already started participating in both training courses.
