Thames Skills Academy was pleased to attend this year’s Parliamentary Reception at the House of Commons, hosted by the Port of London Authority. The event brought together employers, river partners, training organisations and Members of Parliament to recognise the people and skills that keep the Thames moving.
Marine engineer and Boatmaster apprentices, and those who passed their apprenticeships recently, representing CORY, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers and Transport for London (TfL) Woolwich Ferry joined the TSA team to speak about their training, their work on the river and their experience of building a career as a skipper or engineer on the Thames. They met and shared their experiences with riverside MPs Florence Eshalomi MP, Dr Lauren Sullivan MP and James Asser MP, as well as The Baronness Pidgeon MBE, and Joshua Coleman, who attended on behalf of Darren Paffey MP for Southampton.
We were particularly proud to highlight the journey of Lenny King, who passed his Boatmaster apprenticeship in 2022 and continues his successful career with Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, recently achieving his fast craft endorsement from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). His story shows how strong pathways, the right support and hands-on experience can turn early training into long-term careers on the river.

Throughout the event, apprentices spoke confidently and professionally about their work, ambitions and the future of #CareersOnTheThames. Their presence was a powerful reminder that the next generation of skilled river professionals is already here, building experience and shaping the Thames of tomorrow.
Collaboration builds skills. Skills build the river. The TSA looks forward to more apprentice involvement and partnership opportunities throughout 2026.
